How to know Jesus

going deeper ...to go further

Daily Bible reading strengthens our relationship with God, nourishes our spirits and equips us to live a fruitful, effective life for Him.

This month we’re reading some passages about the victory and overcoming alongside a chapter of Acts each day.

  • 2SAM 23:5 2 Samuel 23:5
  • ACT 12 Acts 12
  • 5“If my house were not right with God, surely he would not have made with me an everlasting covenant, arranged and secured in every part;surely he would not bring to fruition my salvation and grant me my every desire.

  • An angel frees Peter from jail1About this time a persecution began, when king Herod arrested some believers in the church.2He had the apostle James, John's brother, killed with a sword.3Seeing that this pleased the Jewish leaders, Herod then had Peter arrested during the Passover Feast.4He had him thrown into prison where he was guarded around the clock by four squads, each of four soldiers. Herod's intention was to try Peter publicly after the Passover.5But while he was in prison the church prayed earnestly for Peter.6On the eve of the day set by Herod for his trial, Peter was asleep between two soldiers, bound by two chains with sentries also standing guard at the entrance to his prison.7Suddenly a bright light shone into the cell and one of the Lord's angels appeared. He shook Peter to awaken him and said: "Get up quickly!" Immediately the chains on Peter's wrists fell off!8The angel said to him: "Get dressed and put your sandals on." Peter did so. "Wrap your cloak around you and follow me," the angel instructed him.9So Peter followed him out of the prison. But the whole event seemed so unreal, he didn't realise that this was actually happening; he thought he must be seeing a vision.10They passed both the first and the second guards and when they came to the prison gate it opened for them by itself. They passed out into the city and when they had walked down one street together, the angel disappeared suddenly!11Peter then realised that this was not his imagination and thought, 'Now I know for sure that it is true! The Lord really did send His angel to rescue me from Herod and from all that the Jewish people intended to do to me.'Peter returns to the believers12When he realised this, Peter went to the house of Mary, John Mark's mother, where many had gathered to pray for him.13He knocked on the outer gate and a servant girl called Rhoda came to see who was there.14When she recognised Peter's voice she ran back into the house without opening the door and told everyone: "Peter is at the door!"15"You must be imagining things," they replied. But she kept insisting that it was true. So they said: "Well, it must be his angel."16Meanwhile Peter continued to bang on the door. When finally they opened it and saw that it was indeed Peter they were amazed.17Peter indicated with his hand that they should be quiet and then explained how the Lord had freed him from the prison. "Tell James and the other brothers what has happened," he said before leaving for another place.Herod struck dead18There was great consternation among the soldiers on the following morning; they had no idea what had become of Peter.19Herod ordered a thorough search to be made for him. This proved fruitless, so he then interrogated the guards before ordering their execution.20Then Herod left Judea for Caesarea where he stayed for a time. He was very angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon; so they sent a delegation to settle the dispute. With the support of Blastus, one of the king's close personal assistants, they made peace with Herod, as they were dependent on his country for their food supply.21On the appointed day of the audience Herod sat on his throne in his royal robes and made a speech.22The people shouted: "This is not a man speaking, but the voice of a god!"23Immediately one of the Lord's angels struck him with a terrible disease, because he received the acclaim for himself and did not give praise to God. Herod was eaten by worms and died.24However, God's Word continued to spread and the number of believers increased.25When Barnabas and Saul had completed their mission in Jerusalem, they returned to Antioch, taking John Mark with them.

  • S.O.A.P.

In order to go further in the mission God has given us, He said we need to go deeper in our relationship with Him. As with any tree or plant, the fruit is determined by the health and depth of the root. One way we have been going deeper is by reading and journaling through the Word every day. We’ve called it S.O.A.P.

    [S]cripture - Read the Word
[O]bservation - Write down what God is saying/showing you
[A]pplication - How do we apply this in our lives?
[P]rayer - Pray through and over your life

As we read the Word (Scripture), listen to the Holy Spirit (Observation), discover how to apply that to our lives (Application) and pray these things over our lives and those in the Church (Prayer) we’re going deeper in our relationship with God so that we can go further in the mission He’s given us.

Throughout the rest of the year we’ll be continuing our Bible Reading Plan to press deeper into God so that we can go further in His purposes. Get yourself a Bible, a journal and a pen and SOAP your way through the scriptures!

You can see which chapters we’re reading today above this section.
